The Drug Court is a specialist Court designed to assist offenders who have drug dependency issues and have been charged with criminal offences.

The Drug Court does this by establishing a scheme under which certain drug dependent offenders who are charged with criminal offences can be diverted into programs designed to eliminate or at least reduce their dependency on drugs.

Drug Court also establishes a scheme for compulsory drug treatment and rehabilitation programs. It is the aim of the Drug Court that through participation in these programs that drug dependent offenders will be able to break the cycle of drug related offending.

In 2020, BOCSAR conducted a study into the effectiveness of the NSW Drug Court in reducing re-offending rates. The study concluded that there are long term beneficial effects on the total number of reconvictions and the risk of another person offence. For the complete report, please click here.

The Drug Court currently operates out of Sydney, Parramatta and Toronto.
